Finally, Some Good News from Google for Franchise Lead Generation

By: Michael Alston for Franchise Insights
October 21, 2026 – Finally, some good news breaks for brands who value inbound traffic from Google Search for franchise lead generation. Google announced that it is placing more links in the AI Overviews and AI Mode which now dominate the search experience there. Brand icons, where available, show alongside the links.
This is a very positive development, given the declines in clicks and resulting organic traffic to individual websites since the introduction of AI Overviews and AI Mode over the last few years. These declines in referred traffic and clicks come despite overall increases in total search and click volumes according to sources at Google reported with Q1 and Q2 2026 results.
Google still dominates search with over 91% market share, and between AI Overviews and Gemini AI offered free in the Chrome browser (with over 68% market share), less than one-third of Google searches in early 2026 ended with any click. With the growth of chatbots and AI-enabled research, a reliable source for lead generation is disappearing.
We will summarize some of the highlights for franchise advertisers, but you can read the full blog post about the changes from Google here. For all of our examples, we compress the ‘Sponsored Results’ (paid ads) so that you can see more of the content experience.
First, the number of links to websites has increased substantially.
According to the blog post, Google has made “continued and substantial increases to the presence of inline links in our AI experiences” and is “launching updates to show inline links higher up in responses more frequently, helping to ensure key sources are easily clickable right when you need them.” There is no quantitative measurement of the increase, but here is what we found.
For several example search phrases popular among individuals searching for franchises, we found links with thumbnail brand icons for every bullet point in the AI Overviews. An example from AI Overviews is below, with the results for “franchise opportunities near me.”

Here are the results in AI mode, for the same search phrase, or prompt.

Authoritative sources now get top billing.
If there are only one or two authoritative sources, they are cited in the opening paragraph, sometimes under “Quick results from the web.”
Here are example results for “Sam The Concrete Man franchise openings.” This example shows prominent links to the brand up top, and with most of the citations direct to the source or video.

News sources, if any, are highlighted in a carousel.
If there are any relevant news articles, they are presented in carousel format. If the user has indicated any of these sources previously as “preferred”, they are listed first.
Prominent links with graphics follow the AI summary.
As the user dives deeper into the results, integrated links continue along with relevant graphics. For example, down below search results for “what is the most helpful trade association for franchisors” you find this carousel:

These changes were announced on Thursday, October 15, 2026. In the months ahead, we will see the extent to which these changes improve organic referrals.
But from the looks of it, there are substantially more links, and that should lead to more traffic to authoritative (brands) and helpful sources for franchise research.
