What Do Google Earnings Metrics Say About Franchise Lead Generation?

By: Michael Alston for Franchise Insights

October 29, 2026 – Alphabet shocked the financial markets yesterday afternoon with metrics showing a decrease in revenue from search. This morning, the stock is trading down about 12%, or $500 billion in market cap – roughly equivalent to the entire value of Intel or Mastercard.

That is about the value of the bottom 30-35 companies S&P 500. It is the GDP of entire countries like Malaysia, Vietnam, The Philippines, Denmark, South Africa, Norway, Israel, the UAE, among others.

Why all the fuss, and what does it tell us about how the franchise lead generation ecosystem might be changing?

Search Query Volume is Exploding, but Search Revenue Grew Slower Over the Past Three Quarters

According to CEO Sundar Pichai, search queries grew at the fastest year-over-year rate in 5 years, as Google expanded the availability of AI Mode globally. But ad revenue grew year-over-year by “only” 10.5%, down from 17% in Q2, and 19% in Q1 as shown in the above chart. The CFO offered unfavorable exchange rates, and the non-recurring ad spending boost from the World Cup as factors. But three quarters of sequential decreases in growth, and an acceleration of the decline in this quarter suggest more fundamental reasons that perhaps they didn’t want to discuss publicly while the product is still evolving and being propagated globally.

Fast Query Growth and Lower Revenue Growth Imply Lower Revenue Per Click (CPC) or Less Space Dedicated to Paid Clicks

While they don’t spell it out, it can be inferred that CPCs declined. Of course, the other explanation would be less volume of slots or real estate given to clickable paid ads.

We know from the 2026 Franchise Development Lead Generation survey (conducted in January 2026) that in 2025, 75.6% of franchisors responding employed Google paid advertising (including YouTube), down from 87% in 2024, as 39% of franchisors reported that lead costs increased somewhat (32.5%), or significantly. (6.5%).

Increasing the Quantity of Paid Ads to Boost Revenue Growth

On Alphabet’s Q3 2026 earnings call, Google executives did not explicitly use the term “paid links,” but they heavily addressed the need to “scale ads and sponsored offers globally within AI Mode and AI Overviews to fix a monetization gap”. That means spreading AI Mode to more countries, and implies more sponsored links.

More Organic Direct Links (Attribution Citations) Added

Last week we reported on Google’s announcement that there will be many more attribution links in search results for AI Overviews and AI Mode, resulting in better organic traffic for reliable (as deemed by Google’s AI) sources for franchise information. In addition, carousels and

With aggressive goals for system growth, and facing increased competition, and ongoing transformation of lead generation, franchise developers employed AI to gain advantage and lower costs in 2025, and more will do so this year. As evidence, only 11.3% of respondents said they will not be using AI by the end of 2026.

Over 88% of Franchise Development teams are adopting Artificial Intelligence tools in one or more areas of their lead generation efforts.

By the end of 2026, 88.7% of respondents to the 2026 Franchise Development Lead Generation Survey say they will have deployed AI tools in at least one part of their processes in pursuit of creative content options, lower costs or improved performance. While franchises increasing their expansion budgets (18.5%) included all tiers of system sizes, 76.7% made tactical changes in their budget allocations among the largest paid sources in 2025 and plan to do so in 2026.
